Mattachine Denver
Description
These images show the full convention program for the Denver meeting of the Mattachine Society. Mattachine was a homophile organization founded in the 1950s, eventually starting a Denver chapter in 1957. In 1959, the Denver chapter hosted the 6th annual convention of Mattachine at the Albany Hotel in downtown Denver. The conference grew the homophile community in Denver and Colorado substantially, but also brought considerable attention from law enforcement, which ultimately forced the Denver chapter to fold.
Whether queer residents of the Northern Colorado region participated or attended the convention in unknown at this time. Participation in the convention was a risky undertaking, as evidenced by the fact that we now know the FBI surveilled and reported on the convention. However, there is a decent chance that residents of the state to the north partook in the convention and/or its activities.
