Fort Collins Weekly Courier Reports on Preacher's Condemnation on Chicago's "Bathhouse John" (1908)

Subject

Chicago, Sodom

Description

A report from the Fort Collins Weekly Courier on Rev. W.H. Head's sermon against the sinfulness of Chicago. Particular attention is paid to the "First Ward Ball," described as an "annual event" held in Chicago that was a "second Sodom and Gomorrah." Chicago LGBTQ+ historians have identified the First Ward Ball's organizer, "Bathhouse John" Coughlin as "a former 'rubber' in a gay bathhouse who owned several Turkish baths notorious as queer gathering and trysting places." The phrase "special to the Courier" probably indicates the story was written by a freelance writer or, perhaps, came from a wireservice.
