An image of the cover of The Advocate magazine on November 24, 1998 featuring the death of Matthew Shepard. Shepard was a 21-year-old college student at the University of Wyoming and regular visitor to LGBTQ+ establishments in Fort Collins. He was attacked, tortured, and left to die on a fence near Laramie, Wyoming on October 6, 1998. Shepard was discovered and transported to Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins where died of his injuries six days later.
